| Sandwiches & Festivals
- A feast of entertainment! |
| We
are on the hunt for the best sandwich in Huntingdonshire! |
 |
Did you know that the sandwich
is actually named after the fourth Earl of
Sandwich, who resided at Hinchingbrooke House
in the eighteenth century? Apparently the
Earl worked and played – mostly gambled –
so hard that he often asked for cold meat
between slices of bread to be brought to him
as he didn’t have time to eat! It would appear
that not a lot has changed for many of us
since that time! |
| |
|
As part of the
Food and Drink Festival being held at Wood
Green Animal Shelter in September we are in
competition with the other three market towns
-- Huntingdon, St Neots and Ramsey -- to find
the best sandwich recipe. This is your chance
to win up to £150, and really put our town
on the map. Full details will be on the entry
forms that are available throughout the town
-- so look out for the posters!
I know that I have talked about this next
topic in the last issue but I make no apologies
for mentioning it again! As an ex-retailer
I am aware only too well of the difficulties
that our traders are facing in the current
economic climate. So please, before you get
in your car and set out to do your shopping
elsewhere, just think, could you get what
you want in the town -- especially when you
take into account the rising cost of fuel?
I used to hear regularly from customers that
they had spent all day looking elsewhere for
an item that was on their doorstep all the
time! Sadly, now more than ever, if you don’t
use local shops then they will disappear.
For those of you who have asked about the
outdoor concert that we used to organise,
hopefully the Chamber Orchestra of St Ives
(COSI) event to be held in the Free Church
on Saturday 12th July as part of our Summer
Festival will bring back happy memories.
This year’s Riverside Gala – Regatta and Dragon
Boat Racing on the weekend of 19th and 20th
July -- will be bigger and better than ever.
Full information on this event can be found
in the middle section of this month’s magazine.
Please come and support the gala as a great
deal of hard work and effort has been put
in by members of SITI and the St Ives Rowing
Club – I am sure you won’t be disappointed!
As many of you are aware we have been without
a Town Centre Manager for sometime now and
so I am pleased to announce that Jane Bowd
will be joining us and we are all looking
forward to welcoming her to this important
role for our town.

| Summer Festival
Event! |
| THE ST IVES TOWN INITIATIVE
& THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OF ST IVES PRESENT |
| A Summer Prom Concert
|
| |
| SATURDAY 12TH JULY, 7.30PM AT THE
FREE CHURCH |
 |
| |
| The programme will include the very
popular: - |
| |
| RODRIGO CONCIERTO
DE ARANJUEZ - Guitar Soloist Tony Engeham |
| |
| PREMIERE OF THE
DIVINE LIGHT Composer David Ditchfield |
| |
| LAST NIGHT OF THE
PROM Favourites with Flag-waving and fun |
| |
| This is set to be a wonderfully
special emotion-filled concert. |
| |
| |
| Tony Engeham who lives in Cambridgeshire
will play the Concierto de Aranjuez which is possibly
the most popular of guitar concertos by Joaquin
Rodrigo and captures the spirit of the guitar in
Spain. The combination of the piece’s technical
difficulties and the audience’srecognition of this
concerto present a challenge to even the most accomplished
guitarist. |
| |
| The Divine Light is by David Ditchfield,
a local musician and artist, who was inspired to
compose this symphony following a horrific train
accident two years ago. David’s move into classical
music is a departure from his pop roots, having
writtensongs for artists such as Dexy’s Midnight
Runners and touring with acts ranging from Fine
Young Cannibals, to the Beach Boys. |
| |
| The Divine Light is premiered by COSI
at this concert and is a very personal piece by
David that reflects his mystical, spiritual, and
finally euphoric journey through his near-death
experience, and which has been instrumental in helping
him to recover mentally and physically from his
ordeal. Julian Merson, is the baritone soloist in
this piece. |
| |
| COSI are delighted and moved to be
asked to perform this composition, and SITI are
privileged for it to be included in the opening
event of their Summer Festival. |
| |
| The second half of this prom concert
includes favourites The Dam Busters’ March, Pomp
& Circumstance, and of course Rule Britannia. Lots
of fun and flag waving to end on a celebratory note!
With thanks to sponsors Cambridge Building Society. |

| A big thank you |
| In the last edition of SuggeStIves
you may remember reading about the British Heart
Foundation Spring Walk (you may even have taken
part). We are delighted to report that approximately
£2000.00 was raised, this sum was added to by Peter
German who ran the London Marathon and donated his
£1450.00 sponsorship. There will be a presentation
at Copleys Centre on Friday 8th August at 7.30 to
those who raised the most sponsorship. The next
date to remember is the Great Cambridgeshire Run
which will take place at Wimpole Hall on Sunday
21st September. If you would like any further information
please contact Jean Chandler on 01480 469557. |
