| | St Ives Town Initiative overcame
the weather which once more did its best to put a dampener on our 5th Dickensian
Christmas Market, but it did not force us to cancel as last year. SITI did,
however, have to change the location of the craft stalls at the last minute. After
discussions with the District Council at 6.00 am that morning, it was decided
to set up on Market Hill. This year we had made contingency plans for adverse
weather, to avoid disappointing not only the stall holders but also the thousands
of people who visit the town during the day. We do apologise for any inconvenience
the relocation may have caused, but we felt it was better to do this rather than
cancel for a second year running! Father Christmas proved to be very popular
this year, along with the face painting next to his Grotto. We had the funfair
on The Broadway to keep the youngsters entertained. Not all the acts we
had booked could perform due to the inclement weather, but the Somersham Town
Band took to the stage with a very varied programme, which was enjoyed by everyone.
The excellent entertainment that followed was organised by the Christmas Lights
Committee. The best-dressed stall competition was won by Denise’s Flowers,
and the best-dressed costumes were from The Stock Shop. Judging was carried out
by German dignitaries from our twinned town of Stadtallendorf who admitted that
choosing just one winner in each category had been very difficult as the standard
was so high. As darkness approached, the Christmas Lights were switched
on by Mayor Deborah Reynolds, assisted by Billy Byrne, better known to us from
BBC TV’s DIY SOS programme. A wonderful display of fireworks completed the evening.
Christmas was officially here in St Ives!! We should like to thank all our
sponsors, and those who generously gave raffle prizes. All
the events we hold are heavily dependent on the support of volunteers – helping
to erect the stalls in the morning, or taking them down in the evening, or assisting
with marshalling. We are always on the look out for more help, and so if you enjoyed
the event and feel that you would like to put something back, even in a small
way, please do contact us.

| | | What’s new? |

Alistair
Theobald | If
you have been in Bridge Street recently you will have noticed building work on
the town side of the bridge next to River Tea rooms. For many years this piece
of land has become neglected and overgrown, and its ownership was unknown. Research
by a SITI Board member revealed that the District Council was indeed responsible
for it, and so now work has started to tidy up the area and provide a seat. | | The
District Council have recently finished a period of public consultation in relation
to the proposed increases in car parking charges in our town. We await the final
outcome. However, SITI feels that should the charges increase this will be yet
another difficulty for the traders in our market town struggling to compete with
the larger towns, and out-of-town shopping complexes. | | | | Dickensian
Market Success! | We
should like to thank all those of you who braved the elements on Sunday 5th December
to make our 5th Dickensian Christmas Market the best to date. Billy Byrne from
BBC’s DIY SOS, who helped switched on the Christmas lights, was heard to comment
that his hometown had nothing to compare with the Christmas spirit of our lovely
town. It sometimes takes an outsider to remind us just what we have to offer,
right on our doorstep! And on that note, I’d like to remind all our readers to
take full advantage of the fantastic January sales that are now on in the town.
Why travel further a field when we have bargains galore right here? | | | | Another
Exciting Year Ahead! | The
coming year again looks packed with events and activity in and around St Ives.
We are all greatly looking forward to the return of the traditional Normandy Market
on the 19th and 20th April -- an event that has proved popular with both local
residents and visitors alike. Last year we successfully combined the Normandy
Market with our own Farmers’ Market, and this year, at the request of both markets,
we shall be doing the same. The joint market will offer local people and visitors
a huge range of products and produce, representing the very best of the Fens and
France – a unique combination from St Ives! It also provides us with a fabulous
opportunity to promote awareness of our Farmers’ Market, undoubtedly a key asset
of the town. We haven’t forgotten our youngest residents
when planning the year ahead, and we will be again organising the town’s Easter
Egg Hunt. This event will run for two weeks over the Easter period and, like the
Wild Goose Chase, involves finding 25 cards in shop windows. Last year we gave
away almost 200 Easter Eggs to children who took part, and to the children’s ward
at Hinchingbrook Hospital, and to all those children who visited the A&E Unit. Summer
wouldn’t be summer without the St Ives Riverside Gala. This year SITI together
with The St Ives Rowing Club will be treating us to another spectacular family-fun
weekend event featuring the traditional Rowing Regatta, followed by the fantastically
popular Dragon Boat-racing day. The 2007 event was the best ever and this year’s
Riverside Gala will aim to top it! So put the 19th & 20th July 2008, in your new
diary now! Finally, on behalf of myself, and the SITI Directors, may I wish you
all the very best for a Happy and Healthy New Year. | | | | | Alistair

| Christmas Goose Winners |

| The
three lucky winners of the 2007 Christmas Wild Goose Chase each received their
prize on Sunday 2nd December at the Dickensian Market in St Ives town centre.
The competition ran for three weeks from Saturday 4th to Monday 26th November,
and we were delighted that it attracted more than twice the number of entries
as last year. We are looking forward to the event growing further in popularity
in the years to come. | The
three oven-ready geese presented as prizes were kindly donated by The Butcher's
Shop in Crown Street, and presented on the day by Janet Gray, co-owner. The winners,
all from St Ives, were Angela Setchell, Stewart Branch and Colin Saunderson.
SITI, who organised the competition, would like to thank both The Butcher’s
Shop for once again donating the prizes, and everyone who took part in the event.
We should also like to congratulate the winners for successfully finding all 25
shop window cards, and we wish them bon apetit! |

| St Ives Art Group |
|
| | | The St Ives Town Initiative
is indebted to the St Ives Art Group for sharing their exhibition space in the
Free Church this August Bank Holiday to accommodate our visiting musicians from
our twin town of Stadtallendorf, the Trio Mardi Soir. Here is more information
on this talented group. St Ives Art Group has been in existence for many
years with a current membership of 28; some members having belonged for more years
than they care to remember! Meetings are on a regular basis at Wheatfields School
during termtime on a Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The Annual Exhibition,
which attracts many visitors, is held over the August Bank Holiday weekend in
the Free Church in St Ives when all members are encouraged to exhibit their work.
In addition to this main exhibition, members are also asked to each paint a picture
depicting their own interpretation of a subject which is changed each year. These
entries are then displayed together for added interest. We have so much
talent in this area that in fact there is a waiting list for membership, but anyone
wishing to join or find out more please contact Yvonne on 01487 841989.

| | | The
Chamber Orchestra of St Ives (COSI) | The
Town Initiative have been very proud to host concerts with the very talented St
Ives chamber orchestra. We have plans to host another concert in early summer
2008. This year their 2008 season starts with a performance on January
26th 7.30pm at The Free Church in St Ives. Top of the bill is local musician Ellena
Hale (pictured above), who turns 21 years old in January, will perform the Beethoven
piano concerto no 5 in E flat major. |
| A
former pupil at Wheatfield’s primary and junior school, Ellena moved to the Yehudi
Menuhin School in 1995 where she stayed until she graduated in 2004. Whilst there
she performed throughout the UK and Europe, both as soloist and chamber musician.
| | |
| In
September 2004, Ellena began her studies at the Royal Academy of Music with a
scholarship from the MBF (musicians benevolent fund). Since then she has performed
in recitals and festivals around the UK. This is her final year of her undergraduate
studies and so far this year Ellena has performed with her duo partner Vlad Maistorovici,
played in a BBC programme, recorded film music by Royal Academy composers and
played Constant Lambert’s Rio Grande in the Cadogan Hall. She is currently studying
under Prof. Hamish Milne. Information: 26th Jan concert: Cosi Fan Tutte
overture, Beethoven piano concerto No 5, Schubert symphony no 5. Tickets £7 (£5
concs) are available from Just Sharing shop, or on the door.

| | | Unsung
Hero | Jonathan
Salt. | For
many people in St. Ives and Huntingdon, Jonathan Salt will be one of their unsung
heroes. They may have encountered him as an RE and Ethics teacher at St. Ivo and
St. Peters's Schools, as the founding Artistic Director of SIYT (St. Ives Youth
Theatre) or as the man behind Ojemba Travel, the company that organises school
visits to Auschwitz to help understanding of the Holocaust. An accomplished
actor himself with extensive stage credits, Jonathan was a key player in the creation
of SIYT in 2001 to provide access to the theatre experience beyond what was available
in schools - not only to entertain but as a means to help teenagers develop the
life skills and understanding to cope as adults. | | | | A
commitment to challenging themes has seen the company grow from strength to strength
while taking a path that is less well travelled. A musical about orphans murdered
during the Holocaust in 1943 may not seem like an obvious choice for a youth theatre,
but the 2005 production of Korczak was a glorious success, winning media praise
for performances at the Edinburgh Festival. Like many people in St. Ives,
Jonathan hopes to help save the Corn Exchange building and see it return to use
as a community resource. He hopes that this will finally provide a permanent home
for one of the country's most well-respected yet poorly funded youth theatres.
As with most unsung heroes, one of the last people to laud Jonathan
Salt as a hero will be Jonathan himself. |

| Member Profiles - The St Ives Access Group |
| The St Ives Access Group (SIAG) was formed in 2001 and
announced at the time: “We want a town centre that is alive and vibrant and can
be used by people in wheelchairs, those who can’t walk far, those who don’t see
very well, people pushing prams, and those who want to support local shops and
see the town centre flourish – actually that means all of us.” This
is still our aim, and although there has been great improvement to access in the
town, we feel there are still some areas where it is not as good as it should
be. Prior to the enforcement of the Disability Discrimination Act 2004 we contacted
109 local businesses to remind them of the legislation, and to offer advice and
assistance with changes they might need to make to comply with the law. We had
a very well attended Disability Discrimination Day at which we were able to spread
the information to more groups and individuals. Working with Town, District and
County Councils, local businesses and multinational companies, SIAG has seen access
improved in a number of areas: • An increased number of parking spaces
for blue badge holders • Level access to some of the main banks •
Highlighting of step edges for better visibility • Access from Needingworth
Road/Meadow Lane to the long-term car park and Waitrose. • Provision of
playground equipment accessible to children with disabilities • An increased
number of businesses with portable ramps and call bells for assistance
SIAG is a member of the St Ives Town Initiative and we are very supportive of
the work which is being done to improve the town. We have a diverse membership
in age and disabilities, and we are always happy to provide assistance to anyone
who needs help with accessibility issues. Looking to the future, we would like
to see information about accessibility in St Ives available in printed and electronic
form. We are self-funding and always looking for new members to either work on
our committee, or support our campaign.
Please contact Sue on 01480 467091
or sue.ferreira@virgin.net for more
information. St Ives is a beautiful town and by working together we can
ensure that everyone can enjoy all of it.

to Host Members’ Networking Lunch – 20th February 2008 |
| Mokbul Ahmed of Montaz Tandoori Restaurant has kindly agreed
to host our first Members’ Event of 2008 with a ‘drop-in’ buffet lunch on Wednesday
20th February between 12.30 and 2.30 pm. This should give all members a chance
to ‘escape’ from their shop or office and network with others. Mokbul has already
proved the value of networking by asking SITI Director Peter Tremlett and SITI
Member Deborah Stevens to utilise their combined I.T. skills to advise him on
the latest Menu Display and Ordering software. Montaz are currently undergoing
refurbishment and reviewing their use of technology. |
